;; fundamentals
full name;; Raoul de Chagny
nickname;; I guess Erik probably has a few names for him...
birthday;; March 21
age;; 32
sexual orientation;; Hetero
job;; Count
class;; Upper
Canon;; Yes
;; appearance
general;; Age and worry have both left their marks on his face, specially in the lines by his mouth and across his forehead. Still, despite this, he looks quite young for his age. His eyes are of a bright blue colour, he has blond hair and he has kept most of his fair complexion from his younger days.
Raoul has blue eyes and a slim, almost girl-like face. His body, which is of a slim/medium build, makes him look a bit taller than he really is. There is a small scar on his upper left arm.
He dresses in practical clothing, usually in colours like brown and dark blue. Though it's not as fancy as what he used to wear it still clearly shows that he is rich. He only dresses up for formal occasions.
favorite;; His arms.
hate;; He doesn't think much about it but it could possibly be his eyelashes.
heritage;; French
ethnicity;; French/Caucasian
;; personality
general;; Raoul used to be shy and sensitive, blushing at nothing and if upset he would cry, regardless of being out in the public or not. This is something that used to annoy Philippe because, after all, for a man, specially of his station, to openly show his feelings were unheard of during the Victorian era.
These days he is more mature. But he is still sensitive and honest about his feelings, although he tends to keep it within the family. There is one thing he hates, and that is feeling helpless.
He can be rash in his decisions and quick to jump to conclusions. He tends to rush into things if he thinks someone dear to him is in danger. This mostly a good thing of course, but he can be careless of people’s safety, including his own.
After the ordeals in the opera house he has become very protective - some would say overprotective - of his wife and kids. He does spoil the kids, but he cannot help it. He rarely can refuse Christine or the children what they want.

- Sailing
- Reading
- Riding

Fears;;
- That Christine might still have feelings for the Phantom
- Loosing his family (be it to Erik or anyone/anything else)
- That Charles might really be Phantom's son
- Connected to the above is the fear that he may not ever have a real heir to the Changy name.
Secrets;;
- His suspicion that Charles isn't his son
- He was born left-handed
- Uhm... Meg
;; origins
general;; Raoul was throughout his childhood spoiled by his older siblings. Despite that he didn’t become too selfish although it wouldn’t be right to say that it didn’t affect him at all. When their father died Philippe became the head of the family and he made sure that Raoul had a good education. Education was by the way a thing he struggled with. Being left-handed he had great trouble learning to write as he was forced to use his right hand, which he absolutely hated but did anyway because he believed it when he was told that using one's left hand was a sin. Other than that Raoul's childhood was pretty uneventful.
Raoul first met Christine while they were still just kids. He was on a walk with his governess when they came a violinist and his young daughter. The boy was at once smitten by her so when the wind caught hold of her scarf Raoul, despite the governess’ protests, jumped into the ocean to retrieve the scarf for the girl. After that Christine and Raoul became friends. Eventually he realised that the feelings he had for her was that of a blossoming love. However, he was too shy to tell her.
Raoul did his best to forget her for he assumed they would never meet again, and even if they did the class difference would prevent them from marrying. During the years between their first encounter and their reunion at the opera house Raoul spent his time working in the crew of a training ship called Borda.
When Raoul became a patron of the Opera Populaire he was both surprised and pleased to find Christine there. This time he would take his chance. To his delight he learned that his feelings were returned. Only there was someone standing in their way: The phantom, whom Christine seemed to be drawn to. For some time Raoul was confused about his place in her life, but she reassured him that although it didn’t always seem like it her heart was with him.
In the time following he tried at every chance he got to capture the ghost, whom he thought held Christine against her will. He didn’t understand the connection between the other two and that both scared and angered him.
After Christine told him the full story he offered to take her away, to take her to a place where he couldn’t find her. He wanted to leave right away but went along with Christine’s wish of staying for one more performance. It was around this time they decided to get engaged - or rather, pretend to be. But to him it was real enough for he had convinced himself that in time it would be the real thing.
Christine convinced Raoul that they should keep their engagement a secret, but despite their best attempts Philippe (not to mention Erik!) still found out about it. The two brothers got into many an argument over it, and Raoul himself knew that a marriage between a noble man and a mere actress would be looked down upon the society, but in matters of the heart he couldn’t resign himself to norms and conventions. His feelings for Mlle Daae were too great.
Along with the managers Raoul planned to lure the phantom out of his hiding place by putting on his Don Juan Triumphant and then capture him. But nothing went according to plan; the phantom killed Piangi and kidnapped Christine. He also caused the great chandelier to fall and hurt several of the audience. During the following confusion Raoul was approached by Mme Giry, whom led him down to the cellars of the opera, down to the phantom’s lair.
Upon entering the lair he was caught by the phantom, who tied him up and threatened to kill him unless Christine decided to stay with him (Erik). Christine was forced to choose between the two. Raoul begged with Christine not to throw her life away just for his sake. He would rather have died than to live with the knowledge of Christine being married to that murderous beast. When the girl walked over to Erik and kissed him he thought at first that she hadn’t listened to him after all. But, after this display of compassion, the phantom decided to let them go.
The two lovers escaped and left the city to move to somewhere where they could live in peace. They got married and not long after Christine gave birth to her son, whom they called Charles.
Raoul suspects that Charles might not be his, but for Christine's sake (especially following her miscarriages) he has been trying to put his suspicions behind him. It was a great relief to him when Elizabeth was born as he finally had a child whom he knew he was the father to. Still, his relationship to Christine wasn't the way it used to be.
Which brings us to where they are today; In hopes of saving their love he brought her back to the opera, thinking that if she got to what she had loved so much it could help both feel better about things.
parents;; Both are deceased
siblings;; Philippe (deceased) and two older sisters
other;; Christine, Elizabeth, and Charles.
;; roleplaying
sample;;
Jehan looked up from the flyer and smiled friendly at Grantaire. Yes, he was a bit tired. Not very much, but enough to be in the world between dream and full awareness. “Bonjour,“ he said, noticing that Grantaire was drinking again, as always.
Jehan had often wondered why he drank so much. Of course, he had never asked, but he did have his theories… Fanciful theories that had developed into quite elaborate stories.
One of them featured his comrade as the tragic hero of a story about a knight whom had fallen deeply in love with the daughter of the enemy he had sworn to protect his King against… Then, torn between his passion and his duty he was driven to heavy drinking, thus failing both and betraying everything and everyone that mattered to him, and in the end he would die by the swords of the opposing forces as he rushed to fight them on his own, or perhaps he would exclude himself entirely from the world and die of a broken heart somewhere in the mountains, alone and forgotten. It would have made a great opera, he thought, already picturing the whole thing in his mind…
Lost in thought as he was he didn't notice it when he began scribbling his ideas down on the flyer.
